Chapter 20

I stared at her for a long minute, fists clenching until my knuckles ached and my nails bit into my palms. “Are you fragging kidding me?” She had to be kidding. There was no way she couldn't tell me a damned thing!

She shook her head. “Much of our history, and the true natures of the Udunth, are closely guarded secrets by the Elders of our race. I have been alive for several hundred years, and there is still much I do not know.”

“You can’t even tell me why I feel like there’s a piece of me still inside you right now?”

She looked sad as she shook her head. “I cannot. Suffice it to say that your blood has… made a lasting effect on me, one like no other has done.”

“I felt you. I could hear your thoughts, feel your heartbeat, I felt every sensation in your body while you were drinking from me.” My voice lowered into a fevered whisper. “It felt… it felt amazing and addictive and damn it, I want to know what happened so I don’t fall victim to it again!”

She hesitated too long. There was more information than she wasn’t giving me. Why? Why wasn’t she talking to me? Sure, the idea of the Udunth Elders keeping secrets was probably true, but there was more she knew. Now, I needed to know.

“I made a vow,” she said quietly, “to an old friend that I would never drink from a living being again. She made me promise to work towards redeeming myself for the things I did in the past.” She sighed. “I have faltered several times over the past two centuries, as you saw before your… incarceration. But I still work towards that goal, towards my redemption.”

“That doesn’t explain what happened.”

She shook her head. “I did not mean it to. I was setting the scene for when I tell you that the person I made that vow to was also a Wix. And the true reason your species was all but wiped out was due to the greed of the Udunth.”

My jaw dropped open as I stared at her. “What?”

“The Wix are… I am attempting to put this delicately.” She stopped and tried again. “We considered the Wix to be a delicacy. Your blood, with the power to do all those… interesting things, gave us amazing stamina and strength and speed, far more than the Red Water or the blood from other species could give. But it was also addictive. Extremely so. This led to us… making the Wix an endangered species.”

“You… you devoured almost an entire species?”

“In a sense, yes. It is more complicated than that, but then things often are.”

Silence fell between us as she allowed me to have time to fully understand what she was saying. An entire race killed because of special blood. The remnants scattered to the galaxy, having children who didn’t even know what they were. I was proof of that. My moms always told me I was human. They were insistent, telling me the same thing every time I asked about my pink hair.
